Have you recently found out that your son or daughter is using drugs or alcohol? This can be a startling revelation for any parent. As a crisis counselor at a large public school in Oklahoma, I have witnessed the disbelief, fear, and anger that many parents display when this information comes to light.
I understand the fear of the unknown can cause a variety of reactions as parents come to grips with this new information about their child and their activities. If you find yourself in this position today, I want to direct your attention to a good basic resource that will help you to get a handle on the problem before you.
I recently read “The Addicted Child: A Parent’s Guide to Adolescent Substance Abuse” written by Richard Capriola. Richard worked at the renowned Menninger Clinic in Houston, Texas for many years.
In The Addicted Child, Richard shares his knowledge and experience of working with adolescents with drug and alcohol problems. In short, easy-to-read and understand chapters, Richard talks about various drugs and alcohol and their effects on the adolescent brain. He walks parents through the assessment and treatment process and where parents can find resources to get the help and support they need.
Richard also spends some time discussing various problems kids face such as learning disabilities, process disorders, and neurodivergence which can all play a role in your child’s decision-making. These kinds of challenges can contribute to your child’s flawed decision to use drugs and/or alcohol. It also offers context to when a young person may have the inability to withstand peer pressure effectively. Importantly, he discusses evidence-based treatment approaches so parents can understand the most effective measures they can take with their children.
When you are crying, angry, and scared this book will give you a basic understanding of where to start and for many, getting a grip on what is going on and where to turn is a great relief. Many people have traveled down the road you are on, but there are always those who will support you and encourage you along the way.
